Our Favorite Things to Do in Lake Norman

local • Jul 01, 2021

Lake Norman spans 32,510 acres, making it the largest artificial lake in North Carolina. It also offers endless recreation opportunities for couples, groups, and families. Whether you look forward to relaxing on the lakefront, swimming, fishing, boating, or paddleboarding, Lake Norman provides calm, clear water, enchanting coastal views, and 520 miles of beautiful shoreline.

Are you ready to spend a fun day on the lake? Here are a few of our favorite things to do here in Lake Norman—we hope you’ll enjoy them too!

Boating

There’s nothing quite like enjoying some relaxing time on the water. Lake Norman features a wealth of boat rentals, several of them in Mooresville. To make sure your boating experience is safe and enjoyable, pack all the necessary safety equipment beforehand, ensure everyone on the boat wears a comfortable, well-fitting life jacket, and check the weather before you sail.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding

Expand your range of on-the-water activities with kayaking and paddleboarding, two sports perfect for singles and families alike.

The calm waters of Lake Norman are ideal for exploration by kayak. Before you set out for your adventure, make sure you have all essential kayaking gear, such as a properly fitted Personal Flotation Device (PFD), a correct-sized paddle, appropriate clothing, a sun hat, and an ample supply of water and snacks.

If you would like to try out paddleboarding, Lake Norman is a great place to get in some practice. The days are often calm and sunny with little to no wind. It is best to paddle in a group if someone falls into the water and has trouble getting back on board.

Wakeboarding and Wakesurfing

If you’re up to some exciting water sports, give wakeboarding or wake surfing on Lake Norman a go. Even if you have never tried either option before, don’t let lack of experience intimidate you—it’s easy to learn.

With wakeboarding, a motor-powered boat pulls you along. Wakesurfers, on the other hand, hold on to a rope at first but then let go and ride the wave behind the boat. Wakeboarding allows higher speed and is popular with people looking for a thrill, while wake surfing is usually a more mellow experience. Try out both and pick your favorite.

Fishing

You never know where your prize catch awaits you! Lake Norman is home to various freshwater fish, including crappie, catfish, largemouth bass, and yellow perch. The lake boasts some of the largest blue catfish ever caught in North Carolina—some weighing an impressive 85 pounds.

The best season for fishing on Lake Norman is early summer, but patient fishermen might get lucky year-round. Stump Creek on Perth Road is a prime Mooresville fishing location. Before you go fishing, you will need a North Carolina fishing license. You can purchase a license online or through a Wildlife Service Agent.

Lake Norman State Park

If you are a fan of family summer camping, Lake Norman State Park is the perfect place for you. The park offers over 30 miles of mountain biking trails, a boat ramp, ample fishing spots, and a lovely long beach. Children and adults alike will enjoy the family-friendly Dragonfly Trail.

The campground features well-developed amenities, including kitchen facilities, fireplace rentals, and restrooms. Depending on your inclination and budget, you might opt for a tent, trailer, RV, or cabin camping.

Lazy 5 Ranch

Spending time around Lake Norman doesn’t have to be all about waterfront activities. Located in Mooresville, NC, Lazy 5 Ranch will provide an unforgettable experience for kids and adults who love animals. With an interactive drive-through safari, Lazy 5 Ranch offers a fantastic opportunity to observe over 750 animals from all over the world.

The ranch also protects several endangered species, such as the Scimitar Horned Oryx and the Grevy Zebra. Make sure you check the ranch’s operation hours before you make your plans for the day.

About Eddie’s on Lake Norman

Ann-Margaret Wagner brings her hospitality and restaurant expertise from New York to the shores of Lake Norman with Eddie’s On Lake Norman. Ann-Margaret is the former owner of a successful restaurant in Westchester County, New York, called The Muscoot Tavern, an iconic “Cheers-like” bar and grille. After visiting Lake Norman, she fell in love with the area, saw potential in the restaurant, and decided to make North Carolina her new home with her daughter Lacy.

After purchasing the business, which was previously Vinnie’s Sardine Grille and Raw Bar, she completely renovated the entire space, sold the other restaurant, and moved south. The kitchen is filled with all new appliances, while the bar, dining room, and back patio were all touched up to create a clean, comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Whether North Carolina, New York, or anywhere else, Ann-Margaret’s mission is always to provide the freshest seafood, prime meats, produce, pasta, and bread, every meal.

“I hope you enjoy eating our delicious cooking as much as we love making it for you!” Ann-Margaret
